Railroads are the key to understanding the development of the American West because they show how transportation developed over time. Before they created railroads they had horse drawn carriages, that would bring you from town to town but it would not bring you far distances. When they created railroads it helped the people get further distances than they could go before. This creation helped the people who lived in the west that other things exist than what they have in the west, and that there are better ways to be transported across the country.

Railroads are key to understanding the development of the American West because they revolutionized transportation, before you could either walk, ride a horse or sail around the continent. It powered huge changes in the US like the gold rushes, which wouldn't of been nearly as big without the transportation from the east to the west and blacks changed the current economy many flourished through the railroad system and it produced many jobs but ruined Native American lives.
