Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt, OR Andrew Carnegie was a Captain of Industry? AND What is ONE reason that you believe John D. Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt, OR Andrew Carnegie is a Robber Baron? CommentsCEG 04/12/2011 16:21
I believe that Cornelius Vanderbuilt was a Robber Baron because he wasnt a very generous man. Although Cornelius was the 2nd richest American, he was not the type of guy that would donate to a charity or a fund(not a Philanthropist).Cornelius Vanderbuilt was more interested on spending money on himself rather than giving to the poor. This is one reason i believe that Cornelius Vanderbuilt was a Robber Baron. Wealthy industrialists were Captains of Industry because they helped society. Andrew Carnegie was a Captain of Industry because he gave a lot of his money to the community and donated to librarys. He also helped the industry with his buisiness. Even though some people may say some wealthy industrialists were robber barons such as Cornelius Vanderbilt for owning a lot of railroad he was not because he helped the nation grow just like Andrew Carnegie. Wealthy Industrialists put there money to good use. ECK 04/12/2011 18:21
Wealthy industrialists were not all robber barons, but in my eyes they all treated the lower class with little to no respect. Cornelius Vanderbelt is only one example of what you could consider a Robber Baron. He definitely could not have been considered a philanthropist.Cornelius did not donate or help any part of society. All he focused on was gaining more money for his fortune.Cornelius had nothing to offer that would make him a captain of Industry, even being the 2nd richest man in the United States. For these reasons Cornelius Vanderbelt was a Robber Baron.
